I was born and bred in the south in an era when the memories of the civil war still lived, as my grandparents had heard their grandparents talk about it all of their lives. I wish I had listened to those stories when I had the chance, but I did not get interested in genealogy until middle age, and only just recently began to hone in on my ancestors' Civil War experiences. In doing so, I stumbled upon an intriguing little sidebar to the Siege of Petersburg, a nugget of family history that is developing into a full-blown novel.
