About the Book

William Lawson Griffin, my great-great-grandfather, was just shy of 30 years old when he joined the Rockingham Rangers, Company D of the 5th NC Cavalry (63rd Regiment), just days ahead of conscription. He fought in North Carolina and Virginia before being captured in Maryland at the tail end of the Gettysburg campaign. A guest of Mr. Lincoln's through the fall and winter of 1863/4 at Pt. Lookout, he was exchanged just in time for the Siege of Petersburg, during which he met my great-great-grandmother.

And therein lies a story.
